What Do You Need to Play Mahjong? The Complete Shopping List

So you've decided to learn mahjong. Maybe a friend talked you into it, maybe you saw a gorgeous set at a boutique and couldn't stop thinking about it, or maybe you've been watching your neighbors play for years and finally said — okay, I need to know what's going on at that table. Whatever brought you here, welcome. You're going to love this game!

Before you dive in, let's talk about what you actually need to get started. The good news? It's not complicated. The even better news? Half the fun is in finding pieces you love, because a beautiful mahjong set is something you'll pull out for years.

1. The Tiles — The Heart of the Game

Everything starts here. An American mahjong set comes with 152 tiles, and each one matters. You've got three suits — Bams, Craks, and Dots — plus Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Jokers. Don't let that list intimidate you. Once you start playing, the tiles become second nature faster than you'd think.  Some brands, like Oh My Mahjong include 160 total tiles which includes 2 extra jokers and 6 blanks.  Blank tiles can be used to replace damaged or lost tiles.  Some house rules include the use of blank tiles during game play too.

When it comes to choosing a set, quality matters more than most beginners realize. Cheap tiles are lightweight, slippery, and honestly just not that satisfying to play with. You want tiles that have a nice weight to them, a smooth finish, and numbers that are easy to read — especially if you're playing with anyone who finds small print difficult.  Keep in mind that pastel or thinner numbers may be more difficult to read for some, even if the tiles themselves are beautiful.

This is where we'd always say: invest in a set you love. You'll be looking at these tiles for a long time!

2. Racks with Pushers — Don't Skip These

Every player needs a rack to hold their tiles upright during the game, with a pusher to slide the wall without flipping tiles everywhere. A set of four racks and pushers is non-negotiable — there's simply no comfortable way to play without them.

Look for racks that are sturdy and wide enough to hold a full hand without tiles toppling over. This sounds obvious until you're halfway through a game and tiles keep sliding off a too-narrow rack. Ask us how we know.  Racks can be clear acrylic or coordinated colors to go with your set/theme of your tablescape.

3. The NMJL Card — Your Annual Game Changer

Here's something that surprises almost every new player: American mahjong uses an official card published each year by the National Mah Jongg League that lists all the winning hands. And it changes. Every. Single. Year.

This is actually one of the things that makes mahjong so addictive — just when you think you've mastered it, there's a fresh challenge waiting for you. The current card is the 2026 edition, and you'll want to make sure everyone at your table has the latest version. Experienced players will tell you that having your own card, rather than sharing, makes a noticeable difference in how quickly you improve.  Also, it’s important to note that the card is trademarked yearly, so you cannot make copies of the card.

4. A Mahjong Mat — More Important Than You Think

A good playing mat does two things: it protects your tiles from scratching, and it keeps them from sliding around the table mid-game. Once you've played on a mat, playing without one feels wrong. If you've ever played on a bare table, you know the noise. Tiles clacking, sliding, scratching — it adds up fast. Oh My Mahjong mats are made from premium neoprene that's both thick and surprisingly pliable, giving you a surface that cushions every tile, protects your set from wear, and keeps game night blissfully quiet. Your table will thank you too.

Beyond the practical stuff, a beautiful mat just makes the whole experience feel more special. It sets the mood. It signals to everyone at the table that this is a real game night, not just something you threw together. We've seen players get nearly as excited about their mat as their tiles — and honestly, we get it.

5. Tile Shufflers — Optional but Oh So Satisfying

Shuffling 152 tiles by hand before every game is called "the washing of the tiles" and it's a tradition — but it also takes a few minutes and can get noisy fast. Oh My Mahjong's Tile Shufflers make the whole process smoother, quieter, and honestly a little more elegant.

The stiff, oversized cards give you something substantial to scoop and slide tiles with, protecting both your tiles and your manicure in the process. At 5.25" x 7.75" they're the perfect size for corralling tiles across the table without chasing strays. And here's the part we love — the Charleston steps and gameplay tips are printed right on all four sides, so new players have everything they need within arm's reach while they're still learning the ropes.

6. A Storage Case — Protect What You Love

A quality mahjong set is an investment, and a good case keeps everything organized, protected, and ready to travel. Nothing is worse than opening your set before game night and discovering a cracked tile or a missing rack. A dedicated case — whether it's a classic vinyl roll or a beautiful box — means your set stays in perfect condition for years.
